I agree with part of the observation, but this split into various different channels or niches mirrors what happened in tv and newspapers. They still haven't recovered or found a new business model.

I see something happening to many of the established trade shows.

Hey Newman, this leaves a big opportunity for the organizers who can deliver quality and scale in one venue. The organizer who can segment the target buyers and deliver them on a silver platter AND fill the room with recommenders, influencers and specifiers will be the show of shows in their marketplace.

Spot on, Ken! Looking forward to part 2 of this post. Smaller venues are an opportunity for a more value driven approach both in terms of dollars and in how the messaging is given.

Hey Newman, your observations are clock-on...smaller, more focused shows make more sense. Hell, smaller more focused anything makes more sense in this economy. If you're not easily finding the people you need to find it's a waste of time, energy and money.

Hey Newman...you got it right. It's the same with everything...you and I don't part with a buck unless we believe that we're getting something for it.

Trade Show investments are the same. Most companies measure value in leads (not all, but most)....because leads can turn into sales. And sales drive the business.

[Which reminds me what our former president suggested in a time of national crisis: 'go shopping'.]

Interesting analysis, and certainly a worthy topic. It'll be interesting to see how trade shows evolve in the years ahead.

Again, Mr. Newman, you have hit the nail on the head, especially when you wrote, "Trade Shows are a business. And like any business, if they are not well run, they will fail."

Kudos on another great article!
